Note: For the latest information about the setup and configuration of the IBM Learning Services Digital Video Library, refer to the readme file found on the root directory of the CD.The Digital Video Library has been designed to deliver course contents in an efficient, convenient method. With that goal in mind, course content has been divided between the CD-ROM and the Web.
The CD-ROM includes the core instructor-led presentations, in iPresentation format, as well as the student manuals, in Portable Document Format (PDF). The content on the CD-ROM can be launched through the convenient CD navigation system or directly from the CD-ROM via the enhanced Web interface. The Web interface utilizes Lotus LearningSpace® 5 (LS5) to provide additional functionality such as pretests and posttests, quizzes, progress reports, discussion threads, and the ability to post questions directly to an IBM Learning Services certified instructor. There is also the option of taking a comprehensive test at the end of the course. Students receiving a score of 70% or better will have the option of receiving a certificate of completion.
Stand-Alone Mode
This option allows you to navigate the contents of the CD and provides access to the instructional presentations and the various student and lab manuals. This option requires no network connectivity and can be used while traveling or while working in an environment that does not provide internet access.Note: The Stand-Alone Mode does not report to the progress tracking function of the Web-Enhanced Mode. Any units viewed in the Stand-Alone Mode will not show up as having been accessed or completed on the Web-Enhanced Mode's progress tracking function. The progress tracking function is a part of LS5 and is only available while using the LS5 interface.
This option is intended to provide you the opportunity to access the instructional presentations in as flexible a manner as possible.
Web-Enhanced Mode
The Web-Enhanced Mode provides access to the Lotus LearningSpace 5 online environment. This environment provides additional functionality to enhance the learning experience. The options available only through the LS5 interface include:
- Progress Reports - All activities performed through the LS5 interface are tracked. Test and quiz scores are recorded and the number of times a unit has been accessed are tracked.
- Pretests and Posttests - Tests assist the student with tracking progress and identifying areas that need improvement.
- Quizzes - To test the knowledge a student has learned.
- Discussion threads - An open forum for the exchange of questions and knowledge for registered users.
- Ask the Instructor - Post a question directly to an IBM Learning Services certified instructor.
- LanLaunch - The ability to launch the instructional presentations on the CD-ROM directly from LS5.
Enable LanLaunch
This option installs a few information files to your Windows directory to support the LanLaunch function of LS5. The LanLaunch function allows you to launch the contents of the CD while you are working through the Web interface. This is done with a small plug-in and a configuration file installed on your system. You will be prompted to install the plug-in, if you do not already have it the first time you use the LanLaunch function.
If you are running the course from a location other than the original CD, the Install option allows you to point the LanLaunch to an alternative course file location. This allows the LanLaunch function to work properly from a shared network drive, CD-ROM, or even if the CD contents have been copied directly to your computer.
The Stand-Alone Mode interface is made up of a few key components. The following shows the key elements of this interface.
The Web-Enhanced Mode provides additional functionality. Here is an example of a typical LS5 window and the options available.
The instructional video is presented using the Media Player. This tool allows you to control the presentation and provides an effective display of the presentation materials that are accompanied by the instructor video. When the Launch Presentation button is selected, you will see a window similar to this. You will notice the Video link, which starts the presentation. After the presentation has started, you will see the following window.
